The Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education voted tonight to revoke the charter petition of the Maurice R. Holman Academy for Excellence.

However, the move doesn't mean the school is closing.

Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Cynthia Lane said the recommendation came with a "heavy heart."

"The charter board worked hard and worked to raise enough money," Lane said, of the charter's requirement to raise funding for supplemental programs in the school.

It looks as if the down economy claimed another victim in the district.

Fundraising efforts were well short of the targeted goal of $250,000 a year. Charter members raised an estimated $60-70,000.

"This does not mean we're closing the school," Lane said. "It just might be time to revoke the charter."

As we reported earlier, a hearing will be held no more than 30 days from now where a representative of the charter school will speak. The district partnered with the Northeast Business Association in operation of the school.

In the application for the charter, a stated requirement is the charter must meet financial obligations.

The hearing will likely occur on the second board meeting in March.
