Fire kills one in KCK home
A fire early Sunday morning resulted in the death of a Kansas City, Kan. resident.
Kansas City, Kan., firefighters responded to a fire at 1331 N. 77th Street just shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
A smoke alarm prompted a call to the department. When arriving on the scene, firefighters discovered smoke coming out of the home.
"The (fire) crew located a smoldering mattress fire in the basement," said Craig Duke, spokesperson for the department. "Crew on scene located victim and quickly removed victim from the basement were medical personnel determined the victim to be deceased. Crews did a secondary search of the structure and found no other occupants."
Along with causing the death of the man, who is described as a 53-year-old, the fire caused about $10,000 in damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
