KCK League brings back experience, talent
This week marks the beginning of basketball season in Wyandotte County.
A look at the Kansas City, Kan., League shows that for the most part, the top guns from last year return to the floor this year. Predictions and a brief take on each of the league's five teams:
1. Sumner Academy: The Sumner Academy Sabres are the league favorite and why not? Reese Holliday is looking to improve on his impressive campaign last year, where he averaged a double-double with 18.4 points a game and 11.2 rebounds. Holliday will be joined by three starters from last year – Davonte Chaney, Benny Parker and Eli Alexander. Chaney was arguably the league's best defensive player and he exhibited a nice three-point stroke midway through the season. While loaded, the Sabres will still have to overcome the loss of leading scorer Neil Watson. HEAD COACH: Dan Parra
2. Harmon: Coming off it's best season in 20 years, the Hawks now have a target on their backs. The team looks to take a step up from last year. DeOntae Hooks, Exavier Bass Brooks and Jauan Wilson provide the team an explosive threat on offense. James Davenport looks to provide a team a presence inside. Jervon Hooks is a three-point threat and should see some action. HEAD COACH: Heath Cooper
3. Schlagle: The Stallions biggest boost to this season will come from a starter who was injured all of last season – Rozell Nunn. Nunn, a junior, returns to the lineup this season and was named to the league's Elite Eight team by coaches. La Ray Young and Darius Hill look to provide the Stallions an additional offensive punch. HEAD COACH: Dave Gonzales
4. Wyandotte: Although losing Cortlin Banks hurts the team, the Bulldogs return perhaps the league's best talent in Trinity Hall. With Hall on the court, Wyandotte is a threat to win against anyone in the league. The Bulldogs came together late last year, knocking off Harmon in sub-state. Wyandotte was two horribly blown officiating calls away from making a state appearance, losing to St. Thomas Aquinas in the sub-state finals. Derrick Rolls and other Bulldogs look to provide support around Hall. HEAD COACH: Tracy Dyer
5. Washington: The Wildcats were the lone team to get hit hard by graduation. Washington looks to rebuild a little bit after losing Brett Jones, Dominique Simmons and Kalub Long all to graduation last year. The Wildcats are led by a solid group of juniors including Trevaughn White. HEAD COACH: Eric King
