Unified Government approves new version of casino plan
The Unified Government approved a revised casino plan from Kansas Entertainment Monday evening at City Hall.
The multi-phased casino, located at turn two of Kansas Speedway, would create 3,000 jobs – 2,000 construction jobs and 1,000 permanent positions once the casino is going.
Eighty six gaming tables and 2,3000 slot machines would be included inside the casino. A second phase calls for a hotel to be built. Under its proposed contract with the State of Kansas, the hotel must be started within 24 months after phase one is completed.
Kansas Speedway President Jeff Boerger said the hotel will be built in the later phase because of current economic situations.
"We don't want to cannibalize the existing businesses in Wyandotte County," he said.
The UG approval is just the latest chapter in the latest saga of gaming in Wyandotte County. After voters approved of it over two years ago, the economic downturn last year resulted in the Kansas Speedway shelving its initial state-approved plan.
A scaled-back version was reintroduced earlier this year.
"It has been a long process, but with the scope of the project and the jobs, it's extremely important to the community and state," said UG Mayor/CEO Joe Reardon.
At a public session during the meeting, no one in the audience spoke out against the project.
The Kansas Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board will consider final approval of the plan this Wednesday.
