Zeno, Hawks knockout Bulldogs with late comeback
After years of struggling on the football field, the Harmon Hawks will have an opportunity to claim a share of the Kansas City, Kan., League title.
The Hawks defeated the Wyandotte Bulldogs 16-8 at Harmon High School Friday night. The Hawks improve to 2-5 on the season, with a 2-1 KCK League record.
"It was a big win for us," said Calvin Davenport, head coach of the Hawks.
After falling behind 8-0, the Hawks responded in the second quarter behind a two-yard touchdown run by John Zeno. After both offenses failed to score during most of the second half, the Hawks came back late for the victory.
"We remained patient on offense," Davenport said. "The defense stepped up and created a late turnover."
The late turnover came after the Bulldogs, for some reason, calling a flea flicker late in the game when it appeared they could run the ball out. The flea flicker was fumbled between the running back and quarterback.
From there, the Hawks offense took advantage, as Zeno connected with Jervon Hooks from 15 yards out with under a minute left to win the game. The Hawks added the two-point conversion and would add two more points on the ensuing kickoff, as they gained a safety.
Now 2-1 in league play, the Hawks have an opportunity to claim a portion of the KCK League title, as they take on Sumner Academy next week.
"We're not going to do anything different at all this week," Davenport said.
Wyandotte falls to 1-6 on the season and 1-2 in KCK League play.
