4A Boys Basketball: Sumner-Baldwin game goes just about as expected; Piper, Bishop Ward knocked out

Tuesday night's Sumner Academy-Baldwin game is why you might not play the game.
The heavily favored Sabres delivered a Mike Tyson like knockout of the Baldwin Bulldogs early on in the game, as they prevailed 83-52 in the first round of the Kansas 4A Basehor-Linwood Sub-State bracket.
Reese Holliday led the way with 25 points, while Davonte Chaney scored 15 and Eli Alexander scored 12.
But it was Vernon Vaughn who kicked off the Sabres to a big run early on in the game. Vaughn scored all eight of his points during a 20-4 run to open a game.
Sumner concluded the first quarter up 29-12 and were never threatened from there. Sumner built a 39-point lead during the third quarter.
Back from injury like Chaney, Benny Parker added nine points.
The Sabres will take on St. James Academy in the next round.
The Eudora Cardinals sent the Piper Pirates packing in a heartbreaking overtime defeat for the Wyandotte County team.
Eudora prevailed 54-50, overcoming an early lead against Piper.
Justin Ballock led the way for the Cardinals with 14 points, a game high. Jaron Guess scored a team-high 10 points for Piper.
The Pirates led after the first half 23-19.
Eudora, who upset Sumner Academy earlier this season, will take on the defending 4A state champion Basehor-Linwood Bobcats.
Bishop Ward drew one of the toughest games of the first round – a date with Basehor.
The scoreboard showed why Ward was considered a long-shot.
Basehor defeated Ward 65-31. Ten different Bobcats scored in the game, with four of them scoring at least nine points.
The Bobcats jumped all over Ward from the beginning, leading 32-15 at the half. Basehor padded on to the lead in the third, taking a 47-19 lead into the final quarter.
The host school will take on Eudora later this week. Earlier this year, Sumner defeated Basehor in a convincing fashion. Zach Nill and James Makona scored a team-high seven points.

Bishop Ward
The powers that be have fired our wonderful principal Dennis Dorr. They have given us no explanation other than they want to go in a new direction. I think as a parent, an alumus, and a member of the Ward community I deserve some answers.

The girls defeated Mill Valley 53-37 on the road Tuesday night.
Again, the team was led in scoring by Kylie Burns, who scored a game-high 17 points. A 20-point third quarter for the Lady Cyclones led Ward to the victory. Ward was up 22-16 at half, but blew the game open and led 42-24 after the third.

Muder signed his letter of intent this week to play football there.
Muder averaged a solid 5.6 yards per carry and received interest from Junior College and Division II schools. He was a three-year starter for Greg Duggins' football team.
Last year, he was fourth in the Kaw Valley League in rushing yards and finished in the Top 15 in the greater Kansas City area.
He was selected as First Team All Kaw Valley League. On defense, he had a team-leading three interceptions and was second in tackles.

Bishop Ward softball star signs with Ottawa

Bishop Ward softball senior Jenny Schneider will play collegiately for Ottawa University.
She signed a letter of intent last Friday to play for the university.
During her time at Ward, Schneider has been a varsity pitcher and third baseman.
Last season, she pitched 127 innings, allowing just 107 hits and striking out 106 batters. Her ERA was just 1.50 and batters hit .187 off of Schneider.
“Jenny Schneider has been an inspirational leader since the first day she stepped on the field as a freshman,” Bishop Ward Head Softball Coach Natalie Muehlberger said. “She is a natural leader and has made our program better just by being a part of it.”
At the plate, she hit .333 last year and also led the team in fielding percentage with a .964 percentage.

Bishop Ward boys nearly pull upset, girls fall to Lansing
The Bishop Ward Cyclones nearly delivered the upset of the night in Kansas high school basketball.
The Cyclones were defeated 70--69 on the road against Lansing. C.J. Vallejo and Chris Huey led the way for the Cyclones. Huey scored a team-high 17 points, while Vallejo added 14.
The game was a back and forth affair from the get go. Ward trailed 17-15 after one, but gained a 32-28 halftime lead. The lead remained at five points after three, but a 27-point effort from Lansing in the fourth was too much for Ward.
Ward scored 22 points of their own in the fourth, but it wasn't quite enough.
Meanwhile, one of the top teams in the state of Kansas took to the Lady Cyclones a bit.
Lansing, only losing one game so far this season, handed Ward a 49-31 defeat.
Kylee Burns scored a team and game-high 22 points for Bishop Ward. No other Cyclone scored more than four points in the game.
Ward led 10-3 after the first quarter, but were outscored 46-21 the rest of the way.

She has helped our team to become competitive in the post season.”
During her career at Ward, she had 663 career kills and a 25 percent kill efficiency. She had 278 career blocks.

February 1 Wyandotte County basketball power rankings
1. Sumner Academy: While losing two straight games during the month of January, Sumner Academy remains on top of the power rankings for now. All season long, Sumner's been led by Reese Holliday, Benny Parker and Davonte Chaney. Holliday scored 35 points against Schlagle last week to snap the two-game losing streak. It was in league play last season when Holliday started accelerating his game even more. It might be happening again. Sumner is still undefeated in Kansas City, Kan., League play and the Sabres have won 19 straight league games.
2. Harmon: Sitting at 11-2, the Hawks have narrowed the gap to the top and extended the gap behind other teams in the area. Harmon has won seven straight games, including a 6-0 stretch in nine days. De'Ontae Hooks, starting the season an abysmal 1-29 from three, has heated up and delivered when Harmon's needed it most. Exavier Bass-Brooks, Jauan Wilson and James Davenport also average double figures for the Hawks. The Hawks have won the same amount of games this season as they did from 2000-06.
3. Washington: With only two seniors on the varsity roster, the Wildcats have grown up this season. At 8-5, Washington lost a heartbreaker to Harmon on the road last week. Still, behind the 29.8 points per game from Tra'Vaughn White, Washington is always dangerous and can beat anyone in the league. They've only enjoyed one home game since Christmas. The Hilber brothers are developing a presence inside and Kalen Allen is always streaky from three.
4. Piper: Since entering the starting lineup this season, Dominique Wilson has proved to be a major defensive force inside for the Pirates. Wilson is developing into the best true center in Wyandotte County, along with Davenport from Harmon.
5. Wyandotte: Trinity Hall led the Bulldogs to a nice league victory Friday night at Schlagle. Montel Anderson, Terry Moore and Derrick Rolls have provided Wyandotte a boost. Each player scored in double figures against Schlagle last week.
6. Schlagle: The gap from third to fifth in the KCK League isn't too wide right now. But since Schlagle's lost to Wyandotte and Washington this year, they'll take the fifth spot in the KCK League for now. Darius Hill is making a case as the best rebounder in the league. Rozell Nunn's rust from last season's injury is off. Schlagle has three games coming up against Sumner and Harmon in the next two weeks, so they'll have an opportunity to jump the rankings.
7. Turner: Improved from last year, Turner's led by Chuck O'Neal.
8. Bonner Springs: After a shaky start to the season, Bonner Springs is winning some games in January.
9. Bishop Ward: Ward's had a tough season, but did win Friday night at Perry-Lecompton.
SPRING HILL WRAP-UP: Hogan Prep hands Sumner first defeat
Earlier this year, Hogan Prep from Kansas City, Mo., defeated Kansas 5A power Highland Park.
On Saturday, they took down another giant in Kansas.
Hogan Prep defeated Sumner Academy 79-70 to hand the Sabres their first loss of the season. In doing so, Hogan Prep claimed the Spring Hill Invitational championship for the second time in three seasons.
The usual suspects stood out for Sumner – Reese Holliday scored a game-high 28 points. Benny Parker added 15 and Davonte Chaney scored 12.
But Hogan Prep's four players who scored double figures carried the way.
Dominique Washington and Maurice Mason each scored a team leading 21 points in the game. Dashawn Stubbs scored 14 and Dawon Cummings added 11.
After trailing by six to begin the quarter, Sumner rebounded to take a 34-30 halftime lead.
Hogan Prep then outscored Sumner in the third, a quarter the Sabres have owned the past two seasons, to take a 52-49 lead into the fourth.
Both offenses scored points in the fourth, as Hogan Prep scored 27 to Sumner's 21.
It was Sumner's first loss of the season.
The teams have met in the finals of the past three Spring Hill Invitationals. Sumner won last year's edition, while Hogan Prep claimed the 2008 tournament championship behind the efforts of current Missouri Tiger star Marcus Denmon.
Piper finishes in third, Ward goes home winless
The Piper Pirates were edged by Oswatomie 52-48 in Saturday's third place game. The Pirates lost to Sumner in Friday's semi-finals to set up the game. Earlier in the year, Piper finished third in the Eudora Invitational.
Bishop Ward, meanwhile, fell to Louisburg 56-37 in the seventh place game.

Holliday's 23 leads Sumner Academy in opening round
The Sumner Academy Sabres are off to a nice start on defending their Spring Hill Invitational title.
The Sabres defeated Bishop Ward 74-41 in the opening round of the tournament tonight. Reese Holliday scored 23 points for the Sabres, a game-high. Justin Strickland scored a season high 17 for Sumner.
Without Davonte Chaney, the Sabres only led by two points after the first quarter.
The Sabres jumped out to a larger lead by halftime, outscoring Ward 23-13 in the quarter. Sumner expanded their lead, taking a 60-38 lead by the end of the third quarter.
Zack Nill's 14 points led Bishop Ward, while sophomore C.J. Vallejo scored 12.
Benny Parker scored just two points for Sumner. Vernon Vaughn scored seven, while Eli Alexander and Alfred Belton added six.
Sumner remains undefeated on the season.
