February 1 Wyandotte County basketball power rankings
1. Sumner Academy: While losing two straight games during the month of January, Sumner Academy remains on top of the power rankings for now. All season long, Sumner's been led by Reese Holliday, Benny Parker and Davonte Chaney. Holliday scored 35 points against Schlagle last week to snap the two-game losing streak. It was in league play last season when Holliday started accelerating his game even more. It might be happening again. Sumner is still undefeated in Kansas City, Kan., League play and the Sabres have won 19 straight league games.
2. Harmon: Sitting at 11-2, the Hawks have narrowed the gap to the top and extended the gap behind other teams in the area. Harmon has won seven straight games, including a 6-0 stretch in nine days. De'Ontae Hooks, starting the season an abysmal 1-29 from three, has heated up and delivered when Harmon's needed it most. Exavier Bass-Brooks, Jauan Wilson and James Davenport also average double figures for the Hawks. The Hawks have won the same amount of games this season as they did from 2000-06.
3. Washington: With only two seniors on the varsity roster, the Wildcats have grown up this season. At 8-5, Washington lost a heartbreaker to Harmon on the road last week. Still, behind the 29.8 points per game from Tra'Vaughn White, Washington is always dangerous and can beat anyone in the league. They've only enjoyed one home game since Christmas. The Hilber brothers are developing a presence inside and Kalen Allen is always streaky from three.
4. Piper: Since entering the starting lineup this season, Dominique Wilson has proved to be a major defensive force inside for the Pirates. Wilson is developing into the best true center in Wyandotte County, along with Davenport from Harmon.
5. Wyandotte: Trinity Hall led the Bulldogs to a nice league victory Friday night at Schlagle. Montel Anderson, Terry Moore and Derrick Rolls have provided Wyandotte a boost. Each player scored in double figures against Schlagle last week.
6. Schlagle: The gap from third to fifth in the KCK League isn't too wide right now. But since Schlagle's lost to Wyandotte and Washington this year, they'll take the fifth spot in the KCK League for now. Darius Hill is making a case as the best rebounder in the league. Rozell Nunn's rust from last season's injury is off. Schlagle has three games coming up against Sumner and Harmon in the next two weeks, so they'll have an opportunity to jump the rankings.
7. Turner: Improved from last year, Turner's led by Chuck O'Neal.
8. Bonner Springs: After a shaky start to the season, Bonner Springs is winning some games in January.
9. Bishop Ward: Ward's had a tough season, but did win Friday night at Perry-Lecompton.
Basketball recaps from this week
BOYS
- Northeast 66, Schlagle 59: Darius Hill's 19 points led the Stallions, who trailed 38-25 at halftime. The Stallions narrowed the gap to 47-44 after three, but were unable to complete the comeback. Rozell Nunn added 12 and LaRay Young scored 10.
- Basehor-Linwood 70, Bishop Ward 37: Colin Murphy's 25 points were too much for the Cyclones. Zach Nill's eight point led Ward. Ward trailed 36-19 at halftime and were unable to recover.
- Bonner Springs 68, Perry-Lecompton 36: Four Braves scored in double figures in the victory.
- Tonganoxie 54, Turner 39: Chuck O'Neal's 11 points led Turner.
- Mill Valley 46, Piper 45: Dominique Wilson's 12 points led Piper.
GIRLS
- Basehor-Linwood 60, Bishop Ward 48: Kylie Burns scored 34 points for Ward in the game. A tough third quarter for Ward, who was outscored 23-11, placed the Lady Cyclones in a 20-point hole entering the final quarter.
- Sumner Academy 58, Harmon 5: Kathleen Brisbane scored 16 points, leading the Lady Sabres.
- Tonganoxie 48, Turner 40.
- Metro Academy 55, Wyandotte 21: Royce Shields scored 18 points for the Lady Bulldogs in defeat.
- Piper 46, Mill Valley 44: Danyelle Cole and and Patrice Lasley each scored 14 points.

Wyandotte basketball power rankings heading into holiday break
Talking with some fans and coaches at the Hy-Vee Shootout Saturday, there was some confusion over a recent post.
This post – which was about the overall improvement of the Kansas City, Kan., League – was not meant to be power rankings. It was summarizing the improvement each team has made in an area and I listed Schlagle first because they are the most improved squad.
Here are the first power rankings of the season:
1. Sumner Academy: The Sabres are the class of the county, entering the break as Wyandotte County's only undefeated team. Sumner is 5-0 and the trio of Reese Holliday, Davonte Chaney and Benny Parker have provided the Sabres a nice consistent offense.
2. Harmon: Starting the season 4-1, the Hawks' lone loss came to a very impressive Kearney team by seven points, who has blown out its other competition. Harmon's defense has improved from last year, leading them to claim the Eudora Invitational earlier this season.
3. Schlagle: As I stated before, the Stallions are the most improved team in Wyandotte County so far. The Stallions, behind Rozell Nunn, Darius Hill, LaRay Young and Jeff Jones, can make the Kansas City, Kan., League a three-team argument. The Stallions have a nice resume so far and will be dangerous entering the new year.
4. Piper: The Pirates have two losses, finishing third place in the Eudora Invitational. Jamal Jarrett has led the Pirates.
5. Wyandotte: With only one starter from last year, the Bulldogs are 3-1 on the season. Wyandotte's defeated Washington twice so far this season. Trinity Hall has scored at least 20 points in three of the team's games. The only game he failed to eclipse the mark was against Sumner Academy, who held Hall to 19 points in a short game. Terry Moore has provided a boost to Wyandotte as well.
6. Washington: While Washington had an impressive win against Shawnee Mission Northwest earlier this season, the Wildcats have since lost twice to Wyandotte and are behind the Bulldogs for that reason. Tra'vaugh White is one of the best guards in the league and with him in the lineup, the Cats will always have a shot.
7. Turner: The Golden Bears won two games in the Eudora Invitational and have played teams hard all this year. Turner will not be a pushover this year and the Kaw Valley League opponents on their schedule cannot overlook them.
8. Bonner Springs: Close losses have troubled the Braves so far this season.
9. Bishop Ward: A winless Eudora Invitational have paced the Cyclones to a rocky start.

• Piper 39, Bonner Springs 36
The Piper Lady Pirates needed overtime Tuesday to defeat Bonner Springs.

Piper held Bonner to just two points in overtime, improving to 4-1 on the season.
