Weller places at state for Piper

Piper High School's Derrick Weller, who finished the season with an outstanding 37-5 record, finished in third place in the 145-pound 4A Kansas State Wrestling bracket last weekend.

Weller is a senior for the Pirates.

He was the only 4A wrestler from Wyandotte County to place in the state tournament.

Turner, Bonner wrestlers place at state

The 5A Kansas State Wrestling Tournament was held last weekend and a number of individual wrestlers from Turner High School and Bonner Springs High School placed.

Here they are listed by school and weight –

BONNER SPRINGS:  Caleb Seaton 4th place (119 LB), Jonathan Blackwell 2nd place (130 LB) and Aaron Puckett 4th place (140 LB).

TURNER: James Lohman 5th place (125 LB) and Armando Alcantara 6th place (189 LB).

A list of all state qualifiers from all schools will be posted later.

2010 KVL Tournament wrestling results

The Turner Golden Bears and Bonner Springs Braves wrestling teams were edged out by Lansing in last weekend's Kaw Valley League Tournament.

Turner, a week after winning the Wyandotte County Wresting Meet, came in second place in the team competition. Bonner Springs finished third.

The Piper Pirates finished in seventh place, while the Bishop Ward Cyclones finished in 10th place.

A number of Wyandotte County wrestlers finished well in the individual contests.

Three Piper wrestlers do well in Olathe North tournament

Three wrestlers from the Piper Pirates placed in last weekend's Olathe North tournament.

Collin Zwart, Derrick Weller and Airen Maxwell each won their consolation brackets at last weekend's tournament at Olathe North High School.

• Zwart defeated Tobias Popchoke of Olathe North in the consolation bracket of the 140-pound bracket.

• Weller defeated Grain Valley's Zac Hoover in the consolation bracket of the 145-pound bracket.

• Maxwell defeated Lawrence's Brad Wilson in the 215-pound consolation bracket.

Sumner Academy, Washington and Harmon each competed in the Shawnee Mission North Invitational.

Sumner enjoyed the most luck in the team competition and individual awards. The event was held on Jan. 30.
